RWE npower Renewables have published a project update for the Gwynt y Môr windfarm project. The update is available here.
In summary, construction work on the project is just about to get underway. The first of the “jacket” foundation structures for the two offshore substations in the windfarm arrived on site today, 8th May 2012. The large crane Stanislav Yudin is due to start the installation of these foundations today, which will involve some piling activity.
Work on the installation of the turbine foundations (“transition pieces”) is due to begin in July 2012. Twenty four transition pieces have been fabricated and these are being delivered to Birkenhead along with 38 monopiles, prior to their installation.
Preparation work for the installation of the export cables for the site is being carried out by the vessels Union Beaver and MPR2. The cables are due to be installed over the summer of 2012.
Onshore, four monitoring stations have been established along the North Wales coast to assess noise levels during construction. A project information phone line has been established to allow complaints about noise to be reported (the number is 0845 026 0587).
The update also highlights the investment that the project is bringing to the area. An apprenticeship scheme has been established, along with a community benefit scheme. Gwynt y Môr has also awarded contracts worth more than £70 million with local businesses.
