Scottish and Southern Energy Power Distribution have recently been granted consent to replace the power cable between the Mainland and the Isle of Jura between late November and early December 2014. Notices to Mariners have been issued to advise seafarers about this work. This update provides links to these notices, which are summarised below.
Replacement of cable
A Notice to Mariners advising of the replacement of the existing Mainland-Jura cable can be downloaded here. In summary, several vessels will be involved in the laying of a new electricity cable between Carsaig Bay, Mainland (56°01.76´N, 05°38.59´W) to Lealt Bay, Jura (56°02.46´N, 05°45.48´W). This installation work is scheduled to take place between 30th November 2014 and 4th December 2014 (weather permitting).
The vessels that will be involved in this work are listed below with contact information and a link to their details (including current location):-
- Forth Guardsman: cable laying vessel | Call sign ZIVU6
- Forth Jouster: tug | Call sign 2BME4
- Forth Fighter: tug | Call sign MFEH6
During cable laying operations the vessels will be restricted in their ability to manoeuvre. All vessels will monitor VHF Channel 16 at all times.
Survey work
A Notice to Mariners advising of survey work that is being carried out to facilitate the replacement of the Mainland-Jura cable can be downloaded here.
In summary, the survey vessel Mersey Guardian will be surveying the electricity cable route between Carsaig Bay, Mainland (56°01.76´N, 05°38.59´W) to Lealt Bay, Jura (56°02.46´N, 05°45.48´W). This survey work is scheduled to take place between 30th November 2014 and 4th December 2014 (weather permitting).
